A website’s presentation is heavily dependent on the font the designers use. Since words are an important tool for conveying messages in the most accurate and effective way possible, they are central to attracting viewers and visitors to your website. You have to use fonts which will not only speak words but will send messages on its own and not as a part of a word. To give style to your websites fonts, here are some tips.
Keep your font style simple. A large chunk of web browsing is composed of reading the web pages passed through. Thus, using four or more fonts in a website will make it look uninviting and unpleasant to the eye. Using only one or two fonts, you can have a site that is very appealing. Using fonts that are complicated and fancy means they are hard to read and they give you less flexibility in putting contents together. Plus, some cursive fonts do not load up on all browsers. Complicated fonts can also be troublesome for the elderly and cause eyestrain.
Remember to be consistent in your font usage. Unless there is a need for emphasis (which can be done simply through boldface font or spacing), never change a font style in the middle of a sentence. It is distracting and sometimes cuts off the trail of thought for the reader. Changing fonts is useful for certain parts of the page like the headline, the subheading or the other unrelated links. But using them to just make your web pages look more fancy may create the opposite effect.
Use certain types of fonts for certain purposes. For instance, you may use sans serif fonts for the part of the webpage that contains simple information and use the serif fonts for print content. Serif fonts are excellent for printed media but do not reproduce well on the web. Sans serif fonts such as Arial, Century Gothic, Geneva, Helvetica, Lucida Sans, Trebuchet, Tahoma and Verdana are useful fonts for online use. Verdana is the most widely used font because it is the easy to read for most users.
